Born and bred in South Australia Chelsea Haebich is passionate about the state’s unique underwater environment – a passion that made her take up the rather challenging pastime of underwater photography.

Chelsea started diving in 2009 and qualifying as a PADI Diving Instructor in 2011. What she saw on the dive sites of the Fleurieu and Yorke Peninsulas helped her to understand just how special the underwater environment of South Australia really is. Chelsea also realised documenting that biodiversity was the best way of getting the word out about it.

The motivations behind all this were really quite simple – we don’t protect what we don’t understand… So by showcasing just how special the Great Southern Reef is, Chelsea felt that she is doing her bit to protect it!

From humble beginnings with a compact camera, Chelsea is now using a Sony A7RII in a Nauticam housing and in 2020 won the Underwater Tour Guru Award with her portfolio of South Australian images.

She has also become a regular contributor to Scuba Diver ANZ with her articles on the Great Southern Reef and the iconic dive sites of South Australia.

Chelsea spends as much time as possible underwater at those sites – places she considers as her favorite locations in the world! As her reputation grew she was approached regularly by Australian and International traveler's, dive enthusiasts and underwater photographers to guide them in South Australia. To her delight, Chelsea found that sharing her knowledge was something she really enjoys.

Spending time with like-minded people who are passionate about the underwater world has become a regular feature of her life. Chelsea particularly enjoys organizing bespoke dive itineraries for underwater photographers looking to capture award winning images of South Australia’s unique creatures and biodiversity.

Chelsea is also available for underwater photography workshops and presentations as well as presentations on the unique coastal underwater environment of South Australia.

34° SOUTH

34 South is dedicated to the Great Southern Reef, the little known natural wonder of Southern Australian waters and on the pages of this site you will find insight, images and information on the dive sites and wonderful creatures that can be seen there.

South Australia is known for its many incredible jetties and the amazing biodiversity that flourishes under and around them. And it’s true, they are incredible… but, did you know that SA has more shipwrecks than anywhere else in Australia?

What about the totally unique annual aggregation of tens of thousands of Giant Australian Cuttlefish found at Whyalla in the Spencer Gulf?

There is so much to see underwater in South Australia that Chelsea Haebich created 34 South - taken from the degrees of latitude of the Great Southern Reef - to showcase and inform other divers, photographers and nature lovers about it all.

We hope you like it and keep coming back for more!!
